When you need to show your client the cost and specifications of a job you could generate a quote (and then an invoice), or you could supply a pro forma invoice (just like a standard invoice with a couple of small differences).
In typical agency life, it's more appropriate to generate a quote or proposal (short or longform). Some clients will request a pro forma, and in some companies (notably media agencies) pro formas are standard issue. It's good to have a copy of the AM-Insider Invoice (Pro forma) on hand - it's guaranteed you will need it one day!
